Later on Remington engineers came out with another semi-auto that can fire shorts, longs and long rifles by using a light weight bolt and recoil spring to cycle the shorts, the heavy rubber buffer is to soak up the excessive recoil that results from firing the higher velocity ammunition. The model 550 uses a floating chamber to fire shorts, longs and long rifles. See Item 50 in the model 550 parts breakdown. ![]() The carbine williams designed Remington model 550 does have a floating chamber. If you check the parts diagram for them on Numrich you will not see it illustrated nor listed. The 552 and 572 do not nor ever had a floating chamber. Thats like telling a kid to go down to the lumberyard and bring back a board strecher in wood shop class. One the old wives tales about the 552 that is false is it has a floating cartridge chamber, I had forum members tell me it needed cleaning, I spent the better part of a couple hours spinning my wheels looking for the non-existant part.
